With the launch of three new programs in India to support the growing developer community, the GitHub software development platform aims to double the number of Indian developers on the platform from 5.8 million to 10 million by 2023. 1.8 million new developers have joined the ranks of this platform. India is the third largest developer market on Github and is growing rapidly. In fact,

India is the fastest growing country in the world, Erica Brescia, chief operating officer of GitHub, told Business Line.

 

Posting to platforms such as team questions and discussions increased 75% in India, up from about 40% in other parts of the world last year. In the public repository, the number of contributors has increased by 80% over the previous year. Over a million developers have created their first GitHub repository in India. This makes it the fastest growing and fastest growing country in the world. 

To bring more developers to India, GitHub announced three new initiatives to support the Indian open source community, education and start-up ecosystem. GitHub funds critical work of open source contributors and administrators and launches the GitHub Open Source Awards for India. Starting in 2021, GitHub is providing 1 million grants under this program. “We are trying to create a culture of participation,” explained Manish Sharma, Regional Manager for GitHub. 

“The goal of this program is to reward open source contributors who spend time collaborating, because this is not a free game. This program also marks open source, and almost all technologies are open source. We motivate people to contribute.
